  1. Although the Amiga comes with a number of interesting and useful fonts, there
  2. are no fonts that are particulary well-suited for low-resolution screens. 
  3. For example, if you create a new CLI on a LORES screen, the standard Topaz
  4. font makes it possible to have no more than about 37 characters per line,
  5. which makes the CLI virually useless.

  7. This directory contains fonts that are smaller than the usual Topaz font
  8. in an attempt to fill this gap in the Amiga font situation.  There are two
  9. classes of fonts, one set for HIRES screens, and one for LORES screens.  The
  10. name of each font indicates the screen resolution and the width of the
  11. characters in the font.  For example, HiRes-6 is a set of fonts designed for
  12. HiRes screens where each character is 6 pixels wide (including the inter-
  13. letter spacing).  The point size of the font indicates how tall it is.  For
  14. example, Hires-6 comes in point sizes 6, 7 and 8, which are 6, 7, and 8
  15. pixels tall, respectively.  (All the fonts come in these three sizes, except
  16. for HiRes-7).

  18. These fonts include all the printable characters in the extended (255
  19. character) ASCII table used by the Amiga, including the characters with
  20. diacritical marks, etc.  Thus you can use them in place of the Topaz font
  21. without problems.  The smaller versions, particularly the 6 point sizes,
  22. leave something to be desired as far as the diactirical marks go, but the
  23. standard characters are reasonably well-formed throughout all the sizes.

  25. You can use the SetFont utility to install a font as the current font for a
  26. particular CLI window, or for an entire screen.  See the documentation for
  27. SetFont for a complete description of how to do this.

  29. The main difference between the LoRes and HiRes versions are that the HiRes
  30. fonts have an extra blank pixel separating the letters (to help make it
  31. easier to distinguish one letter from another), and some characters (like the
  32. period and colon) have been widened slightly to make them easier to see in
  33. the HIRES screen resolution.  For example, the LoRes-4 and HiRes-5 fonts both
  34. use essentially the same character images, but the HiRes-5 font has an extra
  35. blank pixel on the right.  An exception to this rule is the HiRes-5a font,
  36. which does not have the extra pixel; it uses the full 4 pixel width for its
  37. characters.  Thus they are better formed, but they tend to run into each
  38. other visually.  Use your own preference when choosing an appropriate font
  39. for your work.

  41. The standard CLI window on a HIRES, non-interlaced Workbench screen provides
  42. 23 lines of up to 77 characters each.  A LORES screen gives 23 lines of only
  43. 37 chartacters each!  The HiRes and LoRes fonts provided here can increase
  44. both the number of characters per line, and the number of lines that you can
  45. use.  The following table summarizes the results.  The last row (8 pixels
  46. wide) is the size of the standard Topaz font, for reference.  The values are
  47. given as  character-per-line x lines-per-screen.

  66. As you can see, the LoRes-4,8 font brings the low-resolution screen up to
  67. the same effective character resolution as the standard hires screen using
  68. the Topaz font.  Despite the small width of these characters (3 pixels plus
  69. 1 for space between characters), the 7 and 8 point versions are quite
  70. readable, though the 6 point version is less effective.
